Ordering vegan Thai food: questions about fish sauce and more

Check fish sauce, oyster sauce, shrimp paste, broth and egg when ordering vegan Thai food. Ask which sauce the kitchen can use for your exact dish.

Tell staff you want no animal ingredients, then ask about fish sauce, oyster sauce, shrimp paste, broth and egg for the exact dish. Choosing tofu or removing visible meat does not answer what is in the sauce. Ask whether a confirmed vegan sauce is available.

Choices to compare

Stir-fried noodles

Thai Express’s vegan options sheet distinguishes vegan sauce from a vegetarian option with eggs.[1] This is a dated example, not a claim about every current location. Check both sauce and egg when ordering noodles.

Curry or soup

Ask what is in the prepared paste and broth before choosing tofu as the protein. If staff cannot confirm the base, choose a different dish they can confirm. Removing a fish garnish is not the same as changing the base.

Vegetables and sides

Ask how the vegetables are seasoned and whether the dressing or dipping sauce contains animal ingredients. Keep the question attached to the specific dish; a vegetable name alone does not establish its preparation.

A short request staff can act on

Try: “I eat no meat, fish, seafood, dairy or eggs. Can you make this with a sauce containing no fish sauce, oyster sauce or shrimp paste?” Then ask about the stock if it is a soup or curry.

If the restaurant offers a vegan version, ask whether you need to request it explicitly and what changes it includes. Confirm that your chosen topping, protein and any included side match that version.

Build an order from confirmed components

Our suggested plan is one noodle or rice main with a confirmed vegan sauce, no egg, and a vegetable side only if its seasoning can also be confirmed. This is an editorial planning example, not a certification of any named dish.

If avoiding fish is related to an allergy, discuss that separately, including preparation and cross-contact. An ingredient checklist and a menu-reading app do not establish allergy suitability. Ask staff what they can accommodate.

Build your order

Suggested starting plan; adjust to the restaurant’s portions and your appetite.

  1. State the complete dietary preference, then point to the dish you want.
  2. Confirm sauce or paste, broth, egg and toppings separately.
  3. Repeat the agreed substitutions before ordering.

Ask your server

  • Does the sauce contain fish sauce, oyster sauce or shrimp paste?
  • Is the broth or curry paste made with any seafood or meat?
  • Can you use a confirmed vegan sauce and omit egg and animal toppings?

Before you order

Does ordering tofu make pad Thai vegan?

No. You still need to confirm the sauce, egg and other ingredients.

Is “no fish sauce” enough?

Not for a fully vegan order. Ask about other animal ingredients in the sauce, paste, broth and garnish as well.
