How can you understand a restaurant menu with no pictures?

Use menu structure, cooking words, ingredient clues, and visual previews to understand unfamiliar dishes.

Read a text-only menu in layers: identify the section, main ingredient, cooking method, sauce, and sides. Then use a visual preview to confirm the general dish style before asking staff about details that matter to you.

Use the menu’s structure

Section headings narrow the possibilities. A word under soups means something different from the same word under grilled mains. Price position and repeated formatting can also separate dish names from descriptions.

Find the decision-making words

The most useful words describe heat, cooking method, texture, and the main protein or vegetable. Words such as grilled, braised, raw, smoked, crispy, creamy, and fermented often tell you more than a literal dish name.

  • Main ingredient

  • Cooking method

  • Sauce or seasoning

  • Side dishes and portion clues

Use images as orientation

A generated or reference photo can show whether a dish is a soup, platter, sandwich, curry, or dessert. It reduces uncertainty, but the restaurant controls the real recipe and presentation, so confirm substitutions and safety questions with staff.

AI dish images and labels are decision support only. Confirm allergies and safety-critical dietary needs with the restaurant.
